The man, who police have not yet named pending family notification, was discovered unconscious and unresponsive on the roof of 601 W 57th Street near 11th Avenue around 11:48am, according to police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the man is believed to have jumped from an unknown floor of the 597-unit Helena 57 West building. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.

The high-end rental tower, developed by the Durst Organization, opened in 2005 as the first residential building in New York to achieve LEED Gold certification for its eco-friendly design. It offers studio, one- and two-bedroom units with amenities like a full-time doorman and private terraces.

Police said their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death is ongoing.

  1. I thought news organizations generally shied away from reporting on potential suicide incidents to avoid encouraging copycat tragedies.

Also, the headline is incorrect. I read this article because I thought it was about a rooftop accident with perhaps safety or construction issues involved, but no. If I had known it was simply splashing a suicide online I would not have clicked, and I regret that I did.
