W42ST Daily 8/6/2020

Apologies for the dramatic subject line. This is all down to my personal ego, and nothing else. As of 8.57am this morning we have 9,989 Instagram followers. Every follower has been gathered organically by pretty sunsets, happy hour celebrations, neighborhood observations, personal messages… but F that! We are happy to have your cats, dogs, moms, friend-of-a-friend’s cats, uncle’s dogs, and even InstaSqirrells….  Please get us over the line to 10K followers so we can live the dream of letting you, our readers, “swipe up.” It’s that simple. I’m that simple!

DON’T BE A DICK THURSDAY
This part of the newsletter (and the next part) is mainly to remind you that’s it’s Thursday. However, like everything in our daily newsletters, it might become a permanent feature.

I was hanging around yesterday on the corner of Nextdoor St and Facebook Ave and found an angry person berating at full volume Mercato restaurant. She was furious, had been a customer for years, she said. But now they had not delivered up to her apartment, they’d been rude. I’m glad to say our good neighbors dropped by and offered suggestions such as: “Maybe they had a bad day too,” and, “If you’ve been such a loyal customer, then why didn’t you raise this with them rather than resort to the social media ‘shout out?” The reaction to her post was more orders for Mercato. The social media followers stood back, thought a minute, and then supported the little guy. It MADE MY DAY! As one of our readers pointed out recently: “If you’ve got nothing nice to say, don’t say anything.” So true.

#TBT WHEN THE CRIMINALS WERE KIDS
Is this light relief? Is this just history? Is nostalgia warming?

Yes, from me, to all the questions above. Read about Jacob A Riis, photo-journalist and social reformer, trying to sort out New York’s poverty issues 130 years ago one photograph at a time.

HELL’S KITCHEN IS OPEN!
W42ST continues to do everything we can to support local businesses who are opening up in new and imaginative ways. Each day we trawl Instagram (with the help of readers adding #w42ST to their posts) and sort through the new offers from our neighbors. Please bookmark “Hell’s Kitchen is OPEN!”, discover what to explore in the neighborhood, and join us in supporting these businesses.
