W42ST Daily 7/27/2020

I spot my friend Johnny sitting outside a barber on 9th Ave, so sidle up, smiling, and stand in front of him, waiting for him to spot me. He can’t, of course, tell that I’m smiling – I’m wearing a mask and sunglasses, so probably look a bit random. But, for the purposes of painting this picture, there’s a huge grin on my face.

He glances up from his phone, sensing a presence looming in front of him, and looks at me blankly. He is also wearing a mask, but I can tell it’s a blank look because he clearly has no idea who I am.

And nor should he. It’s not Johnny. And it’s at least the third time this week that I’ve mistaken someone on the street for someone I know. Damn masks! Can we just all agree to wear these in future? Thanks in advance.

NEW YORK STORIES
George Georgiou has been having the same order at UT47 for a while now – the #18 with extra avocado never fails to give him the mid-afternoon boost he needs. Korean owner and “food developer” (she refuses to call herself a chef) Mi-Young Yu tells him about her background in fine art and interior design, and how she discovered vegan and gluten-free cooking. This is her story

Hell’s Kitchen should be way ahead of this trend. Because it looks like dogs are able to sniff out coronavirus with just a few days of training. I’m hoping that deeply invasive nose swab could soon be switched for a cuddle with a labradoodle.
