Southern-style ribs from a Georgia family restaurant are making their debut in Hell’s Kitchen with the opening — after months of delay — of Shane’s Rib Shack on 9th Avenue.
Its dining shed has been a familiar sight since last year, with the promise of “opening soon” now coming good, bringing Shane Thompson’s chain to the city for the first time.
Situated between W46/47th Street, the seven-day-a-week restaurant specializes, unsurprisingly, in pork ribs and other Southern BBQ classics.
General manager Sean Turner said the ribs, pulled pork and smoked wings were proving the most popular orders with New Yorkers.
Shane’s Rib Shack is the latest out of town chain to open a Hell’s Kitchen location. The restaurant was founded by Shane Thompson in McDonough, GA, a satellite city of Atlanta, after he quit a corporate job in 2002 to cook BBQ full time.
He and wife Stacey used a sauce recipe handed down to him by his grandfather Dewey “Big Dad” Brown, a Clemson football hero who inspired him to go all-in on cooking.
More Food + Drink Newcomers
Thompson turned the original shack into a chain, which is now in seven Southern states, Arizona and New York.
Turner told W42ST that Shane’s Rib Shack has made a point of giving back to the communities where it is based, including by supporting local schools, veterans and first responders.

The original shack is in a red-roofed tin building on a rural road — something of a contrast to 9th Avenue.
Shane’s Rib Shack. 673 9th Avenue (between W46/47th Street). More details on their website or their Facebook page. Their current opening hours are Sunday-Thursday from 11:00am-9:00pm, Friday-Saturday from 11:00am-10:00pm.
Last week were passing by and they were offering a sample taste of the pulled pork and it was very good so yesterday we picked up a small order of the ribs. The ribs were great and the best particularly when compared to other NYC BBQ.
For us it was a first in NYC for good “bark”…. we love “bark” and always are looking for more.
Everyone is very friendly and welcoming.
