Happy International Women’s Day! What a great way to start the week. It’s freezing this morning, but we’re going to be having days above 60 degrees this week. Hell yeah!
KQED in San Francisco reports that 78.4% of chefs and head cooks are men, despite the fact that women and men attend culinary school in almost equal numbers. The women who do make it into kitchens typically make much less ($28,300 annually, versus a man’s $34,500) and of America’s 25 highest-paid chefs, only three are women. The only place where it’s better is in television kitchens. Luckily, in the real Hell’s Kitchen, we have Amy Scherber at Amy’s Bread. Women Rock!
Loeb Boathouse is to return to Central Park this spring — after an announcement in the fall that the restaurant had permanently shuttered. If you don’t fancy lunch or brunch, the rowing boats will be coming back too! Here’s a quick reminder of what summer in New York looks like (Loeb Boathouse line for rowing boats in July 2018).
Did you watch Harry and Meghan being interviewed by Oprah last night? It was hard to hear about the racist attitudes and lack of support from the royal family that drove her to thoughts of suicide.
After watching the interview, I listened to This American Life. It featured the story of Derrick Ingram and two friends from the Black Lives Matter protest group, Warriors in the Garden. The central part is about how Derrick is in his Hell’s Kitchen apartment, with NYPD trying to arrest him without a warrant. At one point he calls his dad, whose advice was “call the cops!” Listen here…
