A teenager has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing last week at Pier 84 in Hell’s Kitchen, according to reports.
Luis Gil, 19, allegedly stabbed Hugo Morales, 35, who was sitting on a bench in Hudson River Park. Police said today that the victim had no connection to his attacker. The murder happened just before 6am last Thursday, July 13.
NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig, told the New York Post at an unrelated press conference, that Gil was allegedly influenced by a personal issue, after seeing his girlfriend dancing with another man on social media. According to Essig, he had declared an intention to stab the next man he saw, who happened to be Morales. Essig confirmed that Morales had no known ties to Gil or his girlfriend.
Police located Gil in Chicago after he was tracked boarding a bus heading west. He was taken into custody on Monday evening.

It is anticipated that Gil will be extradited to Manhattan from Chicago to respond to the charges against him. The arrest of Gil was confirmed this evening by Midtown North Precinct at a community meeting.
Last week, NYPD Crimestoppers asked for the community’s help in the search for a key suspect and four other men in connection with the murder of Morales from West New York, NJ.
Throw the entire damn book at him!
Let’s see how tough he is in Rikers…
Absolutely terrible. Way to go, ruining your life and taking another innocent life over a social media post. Welcome to 2023 in America. . KB
This is so America . May he rot in hell .
It strikes me as odd to refer to this 19 year old murderer as a “teen”. I mean, it’s technically correct, but this person could vote and work in the military. I never see references to the “teen vote” or “teen soldiers killed in battle” when referring to 19 year olds.
Headlines are always an imperfect summary of the full story. A quick google shows we are not alone in using “teen” in a headline referring to a 19-year-old. Appreciate your feedback, Gregg, and it’s noted. Have a great weekend. Phil https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/20/us/celeste-burgess-abortion-pill-nebraska.html
