Today’s W42ST Daily presented by TFC — 8/5/2020

Summer is racing by. I chatted yesterday with the boss of a brand new rooftop bar that will be opening after Labor Day above a Midtown hotel. There are small signs that tourists from non-quarantined states are heading to New York. The American Museum of Natural History will re-open in September. I can feel the momentum of a comeback.

I spent the afternoon messaging over 80 contacts at local hotels to check in and see what their plans are. I knew there would be bounce backs, but the ring of so many “email undelivered” messages was heartbreaking. So many connections no longer at their desks serving the city’s visitors. They will be back, I hope, as will be those visitors.

We report today on a petition being signed by locals to “Demand your right to quality of life in Hell’s Kitchen! Close the homeless shelters in our neighborhood now!”  The city’s experiment, delivering thousands of people to local hotels with no support plan (or a plan that failed), should be ended.
