From today (Monday), cash is king again in the Lincoln Tunnel and on the upper level of the George Washington Bridge – but only for a limited period.
The Port Authority has announced that cash tolls will temporarily return to both crossings – and as a result, 100 toll collectors will return to the bridge and tunnel for the next 18 months, until newer all-electronic tolling stations are put in place.
The temporary toll collectors will wear PPE and use disinfectants while on duty.
The Holland Tunnel went cashless in March, with the installation of the technology there expected to be complete within the next two months. Don’t worry if you have a E-ZPass transponders in your car windshield, that will still work at the tunnel and GWB.
So are they bringing back carpool discounts?
Any discount programs that require in-person administration by toll attendants, such as the carpool discount program, will be reinstated at the upper level of the George Washington Bridge and the Lincoln Tunnel while those toll booths are staffed.
